Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has finally hit the theatres and fans are very excited to see it. Since the day this movie had been announced back in SDCC 2013, fans desperately waited for three years to see this. There was a lot of controversy over the casting choices of the movie when WB announced Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, fans were even concerned over the casting of Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman. But they finally did it and the film is finally here. Let’s talk about it.
First of all the movie as a whole looks beautiful, and I recommend that if you get a chance definitely see it in IMAX 3D. The movie is also quite dark and grim. But it’s not perfect, it has a few problems too which I will discuss below. The movie feels like many stories told together but they do not blend in together. Zack Snyder does a great job as giving what the fans were waiting for years, but misses a few things.
The Characters in the movie are very well portrayed. The main highlight of the movie is definitely Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman, he totally owns this version of Batman, Ben understands the role very well and delivers, but this version of batman is very dark and very brutal. Henry Cavill as Superman was good too. This is not the superman from the 70’s, but this is the more modern one which also has conflicts as he feels that is the superman required in this world? Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor is like the maniac Mark Zuckerberg, which Eisenberg played in the 2010’s Social Network, the guy’s a freak. Jesse tries very hard to convince us that he is Lex but it somewhat doesn’t shine, he doesn’t have that aura of the Lex we have known from the comics. Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman was a surprise to see, she gets the best entry in the movie with an amazing soundtrack. Amy Adams as Lois Lane is somewhat important in the movie, but as always she plays the damsel in distress.
Hands down Batman is the best part of the movie, Ben kills it with his take on the batman, he is a mature, brutal and dark batman who has suffered great losses in the past. We also see the movie from his perspective the destruction in man of steel, also the death of his parents which is executed to perfection, and for the first time a batman that can actually fight like a pro.
The Batman V Superman fight is as Epic as it can get, it’s like Dark Knight Returns brought back to live action, But it’s not quite satisfying. The logic behind the big muscles fighting is quite odd, and while the reason for batman to fight superman is specified, the reason for Lex to hate on superman isn’t quite specified. I hope we will see much more in the Director’s Extended Ultimate Edition of the movie which is 3 hours long. Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman is also executed very well, she is one hell of a badass. Doomsday is also in the movie for those who haven’t seen the trailer, The fight with doomsday vs the Trinity looks good but is a CGI slugfest.
It has a few problems, the narrative of the film is not quite polished. In the movie we are told Batman’s story, the hearing for the destruction of Metropolis, Lois Lane’s side story, Batman taking down the bad guys. A a whole these stories don’t blend in perfectly together. We are constantly cut from one part of the story to another, the story doesn’t flow perfectly. But that aside the film is really good. Also there are many cameos in the movie which come out of nowhere but are good giving us a look at what is to come. Zack Snyder is a great director but not a great storyteller, but he pulled this off. There are a few instances which Zack Snyder has picked straight from comics, which I won’t spoil and for it you have to see the movie for yourself.
The final thoughts for this movie is that it’s good and different from Marvel movies. But it’s not a movie that you’ll absolutely love, this movie is made for the fans of the comics, but as a casual viewer it suffers a little as there are instances which the viewers won’t get. The movie is PG-13 but the frankly is very dark, so not very children friendly, but anyway they will see it. Not many critics loved this movie but I will definitely recommend you see it for yourself and draw your own opinion.
