Valerian Might Just Become The Next Big Space Opera Cult Movie
The first teaser trailer for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets finally arrived this week and it was spectacular. I used the word Spectacular because it is freaking spectacular, it’ll probably be 2017’s most amazing-looking thrill ride through space.
Based on the French graphic novel Valérian and Laureline, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is the latest film from Luc Besson, who’s best known for The Fifth Element and Lucy.
The series focuses on the adventures of the dark-haired Valérian (Dane DeHaan), a spatio-temporal agent, and his redheaded female colleague, Laureline (Cara Delevingne), as they travel the universe through space and time. Valérian is a classical hero, kind-hearted, strong and brave who follows the orders of his superiors even if he feels, deep down, that it is the wrong thing to do. On the other hand, his partner Laureline combines her superior intelligence, determination and independence with sex-appeal. Influenced by classic literary science fiction, the series mixes space opera with time travel plots.
The original French graphic novel had already inspired Star Wars in many ways like the Valérian and Laureline’s XB982 astroship and the Millennium Falcon are very similar.
The production studio has licensed the first 9 books in the comics series, which means if this movie is successful, we could be in for much more to come.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets will hit theaters from July 21, 2017. Meanwhile for a closer look at some of the best shots and moments from the Valerian teaser trailer, check out our gallery of high-res stills below.
