History of Apocalypse & The Upcoming X-Men Movie
Last week we got our first look next year’s X-Men: Apocalypse with the release of the first trailer, we got to know many things, the most obvious one being Apocalypse. For those of you who don’t follow much of X-Men comics, Apocalypse is one of the biggest villain to the X-Men like Thanos is to Avengers and Darkseid to Justice League.
We got a glimpse of Apocalypse in the post credit scene of the X-Men: Days of Future Past movie, where we observe people worshipping a human figure standing on top of a sand mountain and he seems to be moving those big chunks of pyramids around and we also get the first glimpse of the four horsemen in the background.
So Who Exactly Is Apocalypse?
So as said earlier Apocalypse is on the bad side, rather he is the bad side in the X-Men universe.
His origins can be traced back to 3000 B.C in Egypt. He was left behind as a child by the ancient cosmic being ‘the Celestials’ and was discovered by Baal, leader of the Sandstormers, a desert nomad group. Baal saw the potential in the child and named him ‘En Sabah Nur’ which many comic fans say means the first one and deeply engraved in him the tribe’s philosophy of survival of the fittest. This also brings light to the fact that Apocalypse aka En Sabah Nur is the first mutant the world has ever seen.
When the Sandstormers clan was destroyed by General Ozymandias, Baal reveals that he might be the one a prophecy foretold to overthrow the Rama Tut rule, the pharaoh of that time. Although his initial attempts failed, he was able to defeat Rama-tut after sometime when his abilities fully emerge in his enraged state. This enraged state is when he renames himself as the Apocalypse.
Since then he is said to travel around the world and rule and overtake many civilizations in the world and make the people worship him as God. This explains the fact from the trailer where Apocalypse says he has been called by many names over many years and names some Gods of major civilizations which actually is a pretty scary fact thinking all the things about God or religions mankind has ever known comes from this guy.
With the help of all the Celestial powers he possesses, Apocalypse has the ultimate power of Immortality. The mutant spent lifetimes travelling around the world and influencing many ages and religions. With the assistance of Celestial tech, Apocalypse goes into a state of suspended animation (hibernation in simple terms), while he waits for the mutants to grow more common on Earth. Once awakened in the 19 century England, he helped transform a scientist he encountered into another major villain of the marvel universe, Mr. Sinister. However Mr. Sinister seeing Apocalypse’s vision of the future as madness and chaos chooses to betray him and help the Phoenix and Cyclops, who had been sent back in the past to stop En Sabah Nur. The plague created by Mr. Sinister compulsed him to go in a state of hibernation. However he was awakened by his followers to battle the Dracula, who was turning the members of the Clan of Akkaba as a revenge for his earlier defeat centuries ago as Vlad the Impaler. But with the help of Hellsing, Apocalypse defeats him.
After that Apocalypse spends many years hiding in hibernation, and was awakened by a time travelling mutant the Cable who ironically had been sent back in time to stop Apocalypse. This is the awakening in which he encounters the X-Factor team for the very first time. For his assistance Apocalypse has been seen recruiting Four Horsemen from time to time. His several recruits have been various X-Men members like Storm, Wolverine etc. We even see their glimpse in the post-credit scenes of Days of future past.
What Can We Expect From The Upcoming X-Men Movie?
So if we take into consideration the trailer it much probably looks like, Apocalypse has been in existence since the beginning of time and has been living in the shadows influencing civilizations across the globes and overtime.
Given the fact that James McAvoy is playing the role of Prof. Charles Xavier and Sophie Turner playing the role of young Jean Grey as a student of the Xavier Institute of Higher Learning, the film is based in the 20th Century, in the 1980’s or something where the world has already seen the X-Men: First Class and the Days of Future Past events.
It’s more like an altered timeline story. This is because all the X-Men movies we have seen till now leaving aside First Class and Days of Future Past, we see no trace of the existence of Apocalypse. Like this is the universe in which the Sentinel Project is still active. After the Days of future past events we see more of an universe where all the previously deceased X-Men members are still alive including Jean Grey whose death has been a Major one in the X-Men universe. So taking this into consideration I think the events of the Apocalypse has gone by where the X-Men have won the battle given the peaceful environment in which Logan returns to.
Also I think we would see a glimpse of the mutant time traveller Cable in this movie, taken into account how important he is in the comics when Apocalypse in the picture.
Also a Noteworthy thing here that is Magneto is the main villain in all of previous movies whose only intention is the survival of mutants on this planet and no ordinary humans, which closely resembles the philosophy of Apocalypse ie. ‘only the strongest will survive’ by which he means the Mutant. So it’s strongly indicated that before becoming the leader of the rebel mutants he was one of the Horsemen of Apocalypse. Also according the comics Storm, Psylocke and Archangel can be seen as his associate which means we have our four Horsemen.
It will be pretty interesting to see Psylocke and Quicksilver (who can be seen running around in the movie) because comically Psylocke and Quicksilver are brothers and sisters by birth and they are the Children of Erik Lehnsherr aka Magneto. It will be pretty interesting to see how this Father Children relation is realized in the movie which I am really hoping they have included in the plot.
Well the movie looks pretty damn interesting taken into account the stir Apocalypse has added in the hot X-Men pot. Our doubts would be cleared once the movie comes out and I seriously hope it’s not one of those awesome trailer flop movie kinda thing.
Well there’s one more awesome thing that happened on the Geekternet after the trailer was released, YouTube user Philysteak just created an animated trailer using the scenes of previous X-Men animated series. It’s freaking awesome, just so nostalgic. Drool over it below.
