Some Of The Best Anime Series Ever
Anime is interesting, but not all shows are equally awesome. Now with the ever increasing demand, anime shows are starting to look pathetic, but even in that crowd there are shows which still stand out. These shows have some of the best stories you may have ever experienced and I think even if you aren’t much into anime you must spare some time for these best anime series.
I know I can’t mention all of the greatest anime series ever made in a single post, so I would just list some of them right now and rest later. There is no criteria in terms of genre, only one awesomeness of the show matters. One more thing, the position of the show in the list doesn’t matter.
This is one of the most interesting take on the post apocalyptic future of humans & how they coexist with robots. The anime is Dark themed but has exceptional animation with some interesting character designs.
Genre: Cyberpunk, Mystery, Philosophical
Plot: The world has become largely uninhabitable over the course of time and now what remains of humanity exists inside large dome-like cities. When androds known as AutoReivs begin committing crimes and displaying a semblance of freewill Re-L Mayer begins investigating the cause. This takes her on an adventure that encourages her to ask deep philosophical questions about herself, her companions Vincent and Pino, as well as the world they live in.
This is one of those anime series after Akira & Ghost in the Shell which changed people’s perspective about anime. This anime is not just ‘West meets Samurai’ its more than that. I would also suggest you’ll to not judge this show initially as the show gets amazing as the plot progresses.
Genre: Space Western, Neo-noir
Plot: Spike Spiegel, a bounty Hunter with a dark past, lives on bounty to bounty, barely making it each time, or not making it at all. His partners Jet Black, Faye Valentine, Ed and Ein the dog all help him in his adventures from planet to planet.
An interesting show with ample amount of suspense, amazing character designs and great story. In all it’s a good package.
Genre: Action, Suspense, Mystery, Supernatural, Psychological thriller
Plot: Ryūgamine Mikado is a boy who longs for the exciting life of the big city. At the invitation of his childhood friend Masaomi, he transfers to a school in Ikebukuro. Masaomi has warned him about people he doesn’t want to cross in the city: a champion fighter, an informant, and a mysterious gang called “Dollars.” Nervous from Masaomi’s stories, Mikado witnesses an urban legend on his first day in the city, the Headless Rider astride a black motorcycle. From then on, the existence of supernatural cases and a gang called the Yellow Scarves will rise to the surface, and Ikebukuro will pushed to the breaking point.
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
This show has a perfect balance of drama, action, and pacing. An amazing story of two brothers who use taboo knowledge to resurrect their dead mother. There are two versions of this anime FMA and FMA Brotherhood, although you can watch both of them but if you want to choose between one of them I would recommend you to go with this one as it closely follows the manga.
Genre: Adventure, Science fantasy
Plot: Two brothers lose their mother to an incurable disease. With the power of “alchemy”, they use taboo knowledge to resurrect her. The process fails, and as a toll for using this type of alchemy, the older brother, Edward Elric loses his left leg while the younger brother, Alphonse Elric loses his entire body. To save his brother, Edward sacrifices his right arm and is able to affix his brother’s soul to a suit of armor. With the help of a family friend, Edward receives metal limbs – “automail” – to replace his lost ones. With that, Edward vows to search for the Philosopher’s Stone to return the brothers to their original bodies, even if it means becoming a “State Alchemist”, one who uses his/her alchemy for the military.
If you know about anime, well you probably know about Death Note. Whenever I talk to people who have watched at least a small amount of anime or have never watched anime, they tend know about Death Note and how Kira kills people by writing their names in the Death Note. The amount of thrill in the show is amazing.
Genre: Detective fiction, Psychological thriller, Supernatural
Plot: Yagami Light is an ace student with great prospects, who’s bored out of his mind. One day he finds the “Death Note”: a notebook from the realm of the Death Gods, with the power to kill people in any way he desires. With the Death Note in hand, Light decides to create his perfect world, without crime or criminals. However, when criminals start dropping dead one by one, the authorites send the legendary detective L to track down the killer, and a battle of wits, deception and logic ensues…
This is one of those feel good, heartwarming anime which I guess is underrated like Mushi-Shi. Basically this anime deals around the idea of life beyond technology and how people around can influence your behavior.
Genre: Comedy, Slice of Life
Plot: After punching a famous curator in the face for criticizing his work as “textbook and lifeless,” Handa Seishuu is sent to Gotō Island to calm his nerves and find new inspiration for his calligraphy. Growing up in the city all his life, though, Handa must adapt to country life while meeting an assortment of quirky people during his tenure.
Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!
Among all the shows above this show is little light in terms of its plot, It talks about the 8th grader syndrome which is basically, a person getting too much influenced by the fictitious characters he uses it to fabricate his reality. This a kind of a lovely dovely show with a pathetic second season.
Genre: Romantic comedy
Plot: High school freshman Yūta Togashi was once a “chūnibyō patient” i.e. an overly self-conscious middle schooler. He wants to bury this embarrassing past and begins a new life in high school—unsuccessfully. His classmate Rikka Takanashi, a “current” chūnibyō patient, has found traces of residual symptoms on him and used the fact to force Togashi “making a contract” with her.
One of the interesting takes on Time Travel. The story is amazing, so are the characters and the best part is that the story gets more intensive as the show progresses. Steins;Gate also finds the time to also tell one of the best love stories in anime.
Genre: Science fiction, Mystery, Romance
Plot: Rintaro Okabe is a self-proclaimed “mad scientist” who believes that an international scientific organization named SERN is conspiring to reshape the world according to its own interests. He and his friend Itaru Hashida inadvertently create a gadget able to send messages to the past. The discovery and experimentation of this instrument become the catalyst of fundamental alterations to the present. Okabe is the only one aware of these changes because he possesses a Reading Steiner, the ability to retain the memories from previous experienced timelines. Oblivious of the consequences of their actions, Rintaro and his friends end up creating modifications of grievous proportions. He must then try to find a way to return as close as possible to the original timeline in order to save his precious lab partners.
There are hardly any anime series which center around a single character and still be that good. Just like Barakamon this anime is relaxing. I could easily say that it is the most elegant anime ever made.
Genre: Occult detective
Plot: They are neither plants nor animals. They differ from other forms of life such as the micro-organisms and the fungi. Instead they resemble the primeval body of life and are generally known as “Mushi”. Their existence and appearance are unknown to many and only a limited number of humans are aware of them. Ginko is a “Mushi-shi” who travels around to investigate and find out more about the “Mushi”. In the process, he also lends a helping hand to people who face problems with supernatural occurances which may be related to the “Mushi”.
A man adopts a six year old girl who is apparently is his aunt. The show revolves around their daily lives and how they learn from each other. Kinda like a parenting anime.
Genre: Comedy-drama, Slice of life
Plot: Going home from his grandfather’s funeral, thirty-year-old Daikichi is floored to discover that the old man had an illegitimate child with a younger lover. The rest of his family is equally shocked and embarrassed by this surprise development, and not one of them wants anything to do with the silent little girl, Rin Kaga. In a fit of anger, Daikichi decides to take her in himself. As Daikichi nurtures Rin, he started to understand the struggle while at the same time the joy of parenting.
Yu Yu Hakusho: Ghost Files
There’s comedy, action, mystery and fantasy basically everything you would expect from a amazing anime. It kind of has that amazing vibe. Reports also tells us that this show actually beaten DBZ during its TV run in Japan.
Genre: Martial arts, Supernatural, Action
Plot: One day, 14-year-old Yusuke Urameshi suddenly finds himself dead, having died pushing a child out of the way of oncoming traffic. Since he has such a bad personality, even the Spirit World was caught by surpise that he would sacrifice himself. Yusuke soon finds out he wasn’t supposed to die and has a chance for resurrection and bringing his body back to life. After being resurrected, Yusuke becomes a Spirit Detective, along with his comrades, and one adventure after another happens, whether it be an investigation or a fighting tournament.
This anime has got everything and by everything I mean even flaws but if you overlook that, you would get a great show. It also has some of the amazing plot twists.
Genre: Action, Science fiction, Suspense
Plot: Yukiteru Amano (Yuki) is a loner who never really interact with people and prefers writing a diary on his cell phone with his only companion being an imaginary friend named Deus Ex Machina, the God of Time and Space. However, Yuki soon learns that Deus is not a figment of his imagination but real when Deus makes him a participant in a battle royale with eleven others. Within this “Diary Game”, the contestants are given special diaries that can predict the future with each diary having unique features that gives them both advantages and disadvantages.
If you liked Akira then you are probably gonna love this series. The amount of violence it has is amazing. One thing though like every show, this one isn’t perfect, I mean the ending of this show could be much better, still this show has some interesting ideas and amazing visuals which might not disappoint anyone.
Genre: Action, Biopunk, drama, Sci-Fi, Psychological
Plot: Ganta Igarashi has been convicted of a crime that he hasn’t committed, and sent to a new, privately owned and operated prison, where the inmates are the main attraction in a modern day twist to the gladiatorial coliseums of ancient times. Throw in a healthy dose of weird little girl, some new-found super powers, and a little conspiracy theory, and you have Deadman Wonderland.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
If you watched the movies this one absolutely is a treat, Even if it doesn’t holds up like the movies, the anime is still amazing. Even if you haven’t watched the movies you can still watch this series.
Genre: Cyberpunk, Neo-noir, Military, Science fiction
Plot: In the future, life between the digital and physical world has been blurred. The boundary of technology and humanity has been stretched beyond imagination with lives being led in both the electronic and physical worlds. With the melding of man and machine, a new cybernetic level of existence is being created —an existence that continues to redefine mankind.
Clannad & Clannad: After Story
I just don’t remember any Anime cast for a long time but with Clannad things were different. This show is one of those amazing pieces of entertainment which left me with tears. You will be just amazed to see how a simple story can be so breathtaking.
Genre: Drama, Fantasy, Romance
Plot: Tomoya Okazaki is a third year high school student resentful of his life. His mother passed away from a car accident when he was younger, causing his father to resort to alcohol and gambling. This results in fights between the two until Tomoya’s shoulder is injured in a fight. Since then, Tomoya has had distant relationships with his father, causing him to become a delinquent over time. While on a walk to school, he meets a strange girl named Nagisa Furukawa who is a year older, but is repeating due to illness. Due to this, she is often alone as most of her friends have moved on. The two begin hanging out and slowly, as time goes by, Tomoya finds his life shifting in a new direction.
PLOT COURTESY ANIME NEWS NETWORK
I know these are just a fraction of amazing shows but fear not, I will also list some more shows after a while. Meanwhile beyond those shows there are also some interesting shows but one can argue that they are not that amazing, like Samurai Flamenco, that show was completely random. Anything could happen in it anytime but that’s what made it special. Next I think would be AnoHana, It is also a feels trip show like Clannad. Another was a good Horror themed show and Highschool Of The Dead a totally explicit Zombie apocalyptic anime.
What is the all time best anime series you have ever seen?
